A recent home remodeling trend that has been popping up across the country is using cottage-inspired décor.  Because of fond childhood memories, cottage-styled rooms, particularly kitchens, create a relaxing and open feel in your home. Whether you want to add cottage-style elements gradually to your kitchen, or go all-in with a major home remodeling project, you’ll love this breezy, weathered, simple look. Here are some features you can use to create this modern cottage design in your kitchen.

  • Floors: Even though hardwood floors are an obvious choice for cottage decorating, it is important to know which type to use. You want to install wide plank flooring, keeping in mind that the wider, the better. Dings and a weathered look are not a problem at all, because they add to the character of the floor. You may want to consider looking at reclaimed wood, as well, to really capture the feel.
  • Furniture: When it comes to choosing furniture, the size and brands don’t matter as much as the appearance. Using weathered furniture, such as a farm table and chairs, a buffet, or open shelving also adds to the cottage feel.  Try to include your main table into the kitchen’s design, as opposed to a separate dining room, to create more casual, family-oriented dining. This also makes for a great space for homework, projects and other family activities.
  • Painting: A mixture of fresh white paint and vibrant color are equally at home in a cottage kitchen.  White paint helps create the airy, look of a cottage kitchen. This is a job you can complete yourself or hire a highly trained painter and ask them to add a bright color accent wall. You could also achieve a splash of color through furniture, textiles or appliances, which results in a vintage, casual feel that lifts spirits. Bright yellows and reds present a vintage feel and act as great accent colors.
  • Fixtures:  A farmhouse sink will of course be a fitting choice for your kitchen. Equally good are apron-front sinks, trough sinks and freestanding porcelain sink. Choose a faucet that matches the sink. An antique wall-mount or high-arch faucet goes well with a farmhouse-style sink. Look for a polished nickel, chrome or hand-rubbed bronze finish, which can also be used for the stove, refrigerator and hanging lights.
