How to Create a Home Color Scheme

Do you have a hard time decorating certain rooms in your house? Do you wonder why some rooms feel out of place? Do you ever feel like your home just doesn’t flow? Creating a color scheme for your entire home is going to help bring the rooms together and make your decorating choices much easier. Masterworks Painting & Remodeling can assist you in finding the right color scheme and get your interior painting projects done fast. Here are a few guidelines to help you create a color scheme for your home.

Existing Colors

When brainstorming your color scheme, make sure to include existing fixtures, furniture, and structural focal points in your plans. Take note of the undertones of these things, and decide whether the base color has red, green, blue, brown, or yellow.

Color Basics

There is a vast number of ways to approach the color scheme of your home. But understanding just a few basic concepts can help you get started in the right direction. For those wanting a cleaner modern look, a monochromatic (different shades of the same color) palette may be a good option. Those who love lively colors and a bold atmosphere, complementary colors (colors opposite on the color wheel) will do the trick. Harmonious colors (colors next to each other on the color wheel) are excellent for a calm and relaxing feel.

Decision Time

Keep in mind this is just a guide, but here are the key decisions to make about color. First, pick a white for trim, doors, and possible cabinetry. Next, pick a neutral color (could be a subtle shade of a color) for hallways and open spaces. Third, pick a saturated color along with another color to pair with it. Finally, pick an accent color. This could be a bold hue or another color that complements the saturated color.

Stick to It

Now that you have a color scheme for your home’s interior, stick to it! A good starting point is to start with your main colors, and then add in your accent colors as your style evolves. Don’t be afraid to experiment within your color palette. But at the end of the day, don’t forget to just enjoy it!
