First get a color wheel from Benjamin Moore, BM seems to have a good selection of the earth tones which are so popular today. You will see in the back of the color wheel the historical colors, these have stood the test time and look good up on the wall. Now you have your color wheel out in the room you want to paint, look around the room and take note of pictures or rug colors that you can draw from. Hold the color wheel next to these items and see what colors your drawn to. Helps to have a second opinion. Now that you have a couple of colors, go to your local Sherwin Williams store and have them match the BM color you choose. The samples are $5 instead of $14 at BM. pick-up a brush while your at it and some poster board. Now paint the poster board with your selection before hand.
