Making the Most of Your Small Bedroom

If your bedroom is more “bed” and less “room,” there’s still hope. While it can be hard to get comfortable in a small space, finding home improvement projects that help you utilize your space well will make your bedroom feel more like home.

Below are some tips from an article called “7 Ways to Make a Small Bedroom Look Bigger and Work Better,” written by Shane Inman on Houzz.com:

  • Use Natural Light: Natural light brings an inviting ambiance. Windows also help visually increase a room’s space. If you have to put your bed in front of your window, try to get a see-through headboard.
  • Install Mirrored Doors: Another trick that will make your room look bigger is replacing your closet doors with mirrors. Inman encourages getting floor-to-ceiling mirrors for the best look.
  • Paint the Ceiling: “Painting the ceiling the same hue as the walls can help to erase the shadow lines that visually define a space,” said Inman. “When the walls and the ceiling are the same color, it’s harder for your eye to tell where the room’s parameters start and end, so the room looks larger.”

Inman also mentions that using built-in shelving and pendant lighting will help save floor space.

Other Spatial Solutions

At MasterWorks Painting, we also suggest choosing a few of your favorite colors and creating a color scheme. Having a consistent color scheme will complement your space by pulling the room together instead of making everything seem disjointed. You can incorporate a color scheme through painting and by purchasing color-coordinated accents.

Also, don’t be afraid to try a new layout. The bed is normally the focal point of any bedroom. If you have the space, arrange your bed as far from your bedroom door as possible. Changing the room’s focal point from right beside the door to across the room will make the room look larger than it actually is.
